Build in Open

As part of me pledge for this year, I am committing to the process of **building**, that is the making of product. This word is used in the sense of a koan as something that more than writing, but not necesarily physical.

There is an emphasis on the practical or product, whether that is software, a piece of media, or an institution - the thing that is built should have a life of its own that is social. It should speak to the other.

In concrete terms, the focus is explicitly on iteratively building and releasing software that addresses the original function and community for Hitchhikers - namely H2G2.com. So the commitement to build means to regualrly release software for this community.

This form of building is however half story, half thing. It is a social practice of documentingwhat you build, what you will build and what you have released that others can build on top of.

This *story of the building* is in some ways the opposite of the insistance on product, but in another way it is an insistance that the task is not simple to describe or release a piece fo media, but also that this piece of media should be about something that we are building.

It is the integration of both these elements in a new whole, that we consider to be essentially new. See: - Guide and Guidance - Living Document
