> I have an idea! What if the Marvin chatbot could ONLY search h2g2 for the answers to queries?
And here is some material on an upcoming POST on AI for h2g2.com ![]()
Here are some words of warning:
> Dmitri: PS Reading back through all this, I am alarmed at the idea of making a Marvin robot - unless it is PURELY for entertainment purposes. Because that is exactly where the problem is with these chatbots. They dumb everything down. They take away agency from people. They try to do the 'creative' bits and leave us with nothing but a fake menu of false choices...I do searches online. The chatbots get in the way. I compare my results to theirs. They're telling lies...not vicious lies, stupid, lazy lies...when I put in search terms, they tell me what 'that makes me think'...I don't want them to think, I want them out of my way so I can find the information I was able to find a year ago...
> Dmitri: PLEASE remember, when making tools, NOT to interfere with the creative process. Tools should be TOOLS, not substitutes for human creativity. That means: Do Not Offer AI. AI does not write for us, draw for us, make music for us. We only allow it to search for us, and what you do with code is between consenting adults and plastic pals who are fun to be with. But NO AI IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS
My thinking in response was along these lines (I've abbreviated them by cutting out some of the jokes): > David: Let's discuss. Your feelings towards AI I share, but I do wish to have spaces where I can hang out with artists, and creative coders who are working with AI, and it would be sad if I was not able to do that within the federation of spaces in H2G2. > David: The important thing is not to pass off content that is machine generated, as human. I wouldn't go as far as to create some weird new form of Apartheid, with old bearded folk camping out - swimming naked in nature - with kids and their e-bikes, drones and ai exploring a future they want to live in where ai will be all over the shop. I'd prefer instead a number of experimental spaces - where the rules were clear? See No Passing Off.
# Yes, but... > David: What we don't want is one homogenous space where it is never clear whether something is the voice of a human mind, or marketing propaganda of a group or company, or a machine generated piece of fakery. This is most definitely not what we want - thats an ugly mess - and the way things are heading if we are not careful. > David: Still banning everyone from any form of drug, is just - well - good marketing.
> Dmitri: Nobody's saying you couldn't have an Ai fan club within h2g2. We're saying we don't want Guide Entries written with AI. Or Ai-generated illustrations, etc. And we don't want an Ai called Marvin taking over the site and making us its minions. That's all. We also think that's what Douglas Adams would have said - Sirius Cybernetics was a satire on just that sort of thing.
# Reconcilliation?
> David: I guess here we differ is around the creativity - so for instance I'd like to make a court of ai's and get them to argue over things with each other - I mean that's an art work / performance piece I'm working on. My contribution to Starship Titanic was to help with the chatbot for the game characters. How you write text and create interactive worlds and imagine the future my grandchildren are emerging into is not possible unless we really explore hybrid monsters of this sort.
> Dmitri: sure, no problem - as long as that effort is in its own space
