Bust of Kleisthenes

Inside the Statehouse, notably placed in the **Map Room**, is a bust of Kleisthenes (also spelled **Cleisthenes**), the Athenian statesman credited with laying the foundations of Athenian democracy in the late 6th century BCE.

Kleisthenes introduced the political reforms around 508/507 BCE that reorganized Athenian society into ten tribes (phylai) and established democratic institutions based on **random selection** and **equal participation** of citizens. He broke the power of traditional clans and reorganized society based on **demes** and **geographic trittyes**, laying the groundwork for popular sovereignty.
